Dita mesl Mansonrl a Kerrang Awards-on...
NO STRANGER to the world of fetishism himself, Marilyn Manson had been aware of Dita's work for some time. When he split from actress Rose McGowan on the eve of his British tour in early 2001, it wasn't long before he was joined by a new companion on the road. Of course, the idea of a malevolent figurehead in the world of entertainment joining forces with an equally as strong-minded - if somewhat more clan-cut - beau is nothing new. Back in the 60's, late Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey was famously involved with actress Jayne Mansfield, who he enrolled into the Church and conducted black masses with. When they split, and Mansfield's new boyfriend, Sam Brody, began to mock LaVey's rituals, the latter cursed the pair, saying that they would be dead within the year. Twelve months later, Brody and Mansfield were killed in a car crash.
You recently mentioned that you feel like Jane Mansfield to Manson's Anton LaVey. "Yes, I said that because one particular interviewer was equting Manson with the devil - something which happened to Anton Lavey a lot, too. But I was told that LaVey had a thing for women in stockings and red lipstick and really didn't dress like a woman should, and Manson feels the same way. He really appreciates the theatrics and the type of femininity that I love too, so, yes, there is an obvious comparison there."
How did you two meet? "Well, we were friends on the phone for a while first. Apparently he ad several photos of me. HE was making a video and he wanted girls to look like me. He showed the photos to his manager and said, "why can't they look like this?" That then led him to track me down and after he called me up we struck up a friendship, got on really well, and then we met face to face..."
What was your first date with the God of Fuck like? "The first time we actually met was when I was working on a TV shoot for 'Playboy' and said to him, 'You know, why don't you come by sometime?' But when he turned up, everyone started freaking out trying to get autographs and taking pictures. I had no idea what was going to happen. He did give me a really nice gift, though. I won't say what it was, but I thought he had a lot of nerve to give me such a present and I totally loved it."
It wasn't one of his stuffed animals was it? "No, but it was a close equivalent. I think he was trying to guage how I would react. I suspect that if I had been any other girl it probably would have been over there an then, but I'm not and it isn't..."
Given that your interest in old Holywood iconography, do you think that you were destined to date a man called Marilyn? "(Laughs) That's a good point, actually. Strangely, no-one has ever mentioned that. Yeah, I guess so. It must be fate."
Do you worry about him laddering your stockings? "No! Being around him, though, people tend to be much more worried about the damage that he's going to do to the world then anything I could do. It's very silly, but those are the people who you really have to be worried about; those who misinterpret things and who display no sense of humour. I get the occasional damning e-mail from evangelists. They're the really scary people."
What would an ideal night out - or in for that matter - for the two of you entail? "We like to go out to dinner. Somewhere quiet, preferably. Other than that we tend to spend a lot of time at home watching movies. Oh, and sometimes we sit next to each other with our computers on our laps."
And who does the cooking? "We usually order food in, although I do a lot of baking. Cookies, cakes he's got a sweet tooth."
